WHAT IS?

If I'm going to be a poet,
now's my chance,
two beers, two scotches,
and one more at the starting gate
makes this the perfect time to be
    human
    and honest
    and blunt
about
    life
    and pain
    and horror
ah,
fuck it all anyway,
I think I'll have another beer.

NOTHING NEW

A friend likes to say
nothing new has been written
since Aristotle,
I disagree,
the truth is
there's been nothing new
since Bukowski
ate "Politics" for breakfast,
downed "Rhetoric" for lunch,
drank "Poetics" for dinner,
and shat it all out
the next morning.

Biography

Paul Hellweg has had lots of poems published in journals so small (or so long gone) you've probably never heard of them -- "The San Fernando Poetry Journal," "A Distant Drummer," "Poetry Today," and others even more obscure.
