SOMETIMES I WISH I WAS STILL ON THE GLIDER ON THE SCREENED PORCH by Lyn Lifshin

before traffic was no
more than a soft lull
beyond the elm trees,
ice clinking in frosty

still in 4 inch heels.

Bad time to die

I finished digging my hole. I used my hands all the while, so it was raw and bleeding. But the pain numbed my growing disappointment as I stood in the graveyard awaiting the procession of relatives and friends. I had asked for roses, but I had a feeling that they would go for something cheap. It was too expensive to hire a pastor, so a tape recording would have to suffice. No velvet shades, no chairs, no grace, no hope. Recession was a bad time to die.
